  CONVENTIONS OF MUSIC VIDEO GENRES
As part of my research i think it is important to understand what makes certain videos conventional, so that when i go to make my own i can be as conventional as possible to achieve more marks. The first genre i have studied is pop because even though i don't i as much as other genres it is the most popular and mainstream, so have found the most for this section.Looking at the conventions of different genres will help me to begin using theory accurately and will improve my ability to analyse music videos.

LIP SYNCING EXPERIMENT - 17TH JUNE
This activity was so that we could understand the difficulty of making a music video that is perfectly in time with the audio and also complexly edited. This task has proved useful because in all three types of music video lip syncing is used, even if only for short amounts of time it is still relevant in order to make a successful vide. For our task we chose "American Boy" by Kanye West and Estelle, as it was slow moving and easy to lip sync, making our first time trying it easy. However after watching other fast paced music with more upbeat lyrics we discovered that maybe lip syncing to slow lyrics is harder as the diction and timing of the person syncing must be perfect for it to look presentable and realistic for the audience.

For this task we used Beths iphone and filmed in the netball courts of our school.Although the setting for this task was not a priority being out of the away from the rest of the school meant we were away from distractions and could have better audio quality. The filming did take about 40 minutes because we had some issues with Beth's phone and also both of us were slightly camera shy.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC VIDEOS AND KEY THEORIES -  16TH JUNE

                                        Examples of music video genres

  • Performer music videos are music videos i really enjoy because i like to see and feel like i can get to know the artists creating the music i listen too. a performance music video allows me to do this and i think there is a lot of room for interpretation with this genre and each video can give a different representation of the band or artist, for this reason they can be amazing at promoting a bands live events and shows. The two videos below are both performance videos but show the range of different ways in which the videos can be made.

  • Out of all the music video genres i think that concept videos are the hardest to really do well and give an effect. The video shown is a music video by jamie xx which watches people dancing round the room to "sleep sound". This video is very sweet as all the people shown are from Manchester school for the deaf and they all dance to imaginary music which is then put in time with the music.

  • A clear example of a narrative music video would be Beyonce's "if i were a boy". This music video is very conventional to the genre as it follows her day in the life of her boyfriend. The music video is also in black and white and has clear rhythmic editing which adds to the story and relates it clearly to the builds in the music. This video also follows a relationship and so is conventional in that way too because, generically speaking, most narrative videos follow themes such as love, pain, friendship etc. as they are themes best understood by a large range of people

  • Although many music videos are conventional of a specific genre, in modern times "hybrid " videos have given artists the opportunity to be more creative with what they show to their audience. An example of this would be will and the peoples music video of single 100,00 times before which is both narrative and performance as the short film follows them while they play live music on an open top bus while driving around bath.

  1. A good start.

You are exploring the variety of videos well and your comments are really interesting. Could you add more detail when you explore each video? Apply some of the analysis techniques you learnt last year by discussing camera angles, camera movement, mise en scene, lighting, editing etc. to help you to really get into the details of each one.

Please post dates for each piece of work and make any changes in a different colour font.

Your work shows some really good engagement with the topic - well done! You are clearly working well independently and are getting stuck into the research. Some of your written work cold be more detailed - even though you don't have to present each piece as an essay, the work does still need to be equally detailed. Remember to make any amendments in a different colour.
